Tom with alpacas

Alpacas are beautiful, placid animals and like us all, each has a unique personality. This makes them all so lovable in their own way. Spending time with alpacas is a great way to unwind, laugh and forget the stresses of modern life.

At Arran Alpacas, you will find an alpaca experience best suited to your group - they are a fantastic activity for all!! Our setting in the heart of Arran provides the perfect backdrop.

Alpaca Trekking (90 mins activity)

A fun family activity, trekking is great for getting everyone involved. Your experience will begin with a short informative session where you will learn some fascinating alpaca facts and we provide a health and safety briefing. You will meet our alpacas and be given an opportunity to feed them (this will make you their new best friend)!

view from field

Next we will head out a 3 - 5 km trek in the surrounding farm land with some planned alpaca selfie-stops and there will be plenty of time for any questions you may have! Treks are through surrounding farm lanes and fields which are mostly flat. These are done at a very leisurely pace and are suitable for people with all fitness levels. Some of the ground covered in these treks is marshy. Please bring sensible footwear (wellies or sturdy boots). If you do not have suitable footwear then you will be unable to participate in the trek and no refunds are available. We do stock a small supply of additional wellies which can be hired with socks, but we cannot guarantee we have your size.

We will trust parent's judgement regarding if their kids can manage the full trekking distance. Due to the ground conditions we regret to say that our treks will not be suitable for buggies or wheelchairs. We offer some Alpaca Meet and Greets for those who are unable to manage the full walk!

Once we have returned to the Alpaca Barn, there will be an opportunity to enjoy some refreshments and purchase small trinkets. Feel free to explore our site and enjoy the idyllic setting for a little while longer.

Alpaca Meet and Greets (40 mins - 1 hour)

A great option for some younger or older legs that gets everyone involved is our our meet and greet sessions.

The 40 minute session includes meeting the alpacas, feeding them and learning some fascinating facts.

The 1 hour sessions also includes a small walk around the site.

After either session, we hope you can enjoy making use of our facilities to make the most of your day. Meet and Greet sessions are by prior arrangement and agreement only.

Alpacas Rock Activity ( 1 hour session plus play)

Mostly set during school holidays, our Alpacas Rock activities include a short meet and greet session with the alpacas followed by a small craft activity or scavenger hunt. We have a lovely indoor barn perfect for indoor crafts should it be a typical Scottish day! Afterwards make use of our play park and outdoor space. Bring a picnic and enjoy the spectacular views whilst the kids enjoy running about and feeding the ducks.

Grab a refreshment and small treat from The Studio, a self-service honesty pop-up shop.

Arrival, Facilities and Extra Fun!

Arran Alpacas is based at Balmichael Glamping and is sign posted from The String. When you arrive at the car park, walk down the path and enter The Courtyard. You will be greeted in Arran Alpacas' 'The Treud' located in the right-hand corner barn. Here you will meet our lovely alpacas and any other guests on your walk - then and your experience will begin!!

Our studio next to the barn

If you are early, or fancy a small refreshment after your walk, The Studio beside Arran Alpacas is a small converted barn where teas, coffees, drinks and a small selection of goodies are available for self-service and cash honesty box payment.

There are two WCs accessible from The Courtyard. Guests are asked to wash their hands before and after handling livestock.

We encourage all our visitors to make the most of their day and enjoy our idyllic corner of Arran. Bring your picnic blanket and enjoy lunch beside our pond and play area. There is plenty of space to let the kids run off some steam.

Our resident ducks, Morecambe and Wise may pop over to say hello but please don't feed them bread as this only encourages their greediness!

Instead feed them with duck food available beside the pond for 50p a bag (this is our own children's mini business).
